Another update on the Social Justice Design project! (See here My group created two prototypes. The two prototypes that my group came up with included a community event and bike rental. Our team collaborated very nicely and our mindset was to keep working hard and having a fun time doing it. I think that we brainstormed some very good prototypes! My experience with testing the user was pleasant. Our community partner is very accepting and kind of our work. Before informing our community partner of our ideas we considered the users’ interview and what she really wanted from the prototype. She wanted biker safety and to create a social norm of biking everywhere. The feedback we got from our community partner was very positive! She really likes the event and we choose to present that one for our presentation on May 28th. I noticed that she was being honest with us. She genuinely liked our idea of a community biking event. I learned that people can be fun to work with. I usually don't like to collaborate, but I loved this! My areas for growth are my mediocre art skills. If I were to do it again I would have gotten more feedback so I could tailor the prototype more.

Although there are multiple projects going on in the 9th-grade class, (the main project is social justice, see the previous post) in Digital Design class we're making videos. We get to choose groups of 3 and have to include certain shots, or whatever content we want. Then we edit individually. My group includes Claudia and Bailey, and we’re creating a video for HundrED organization. The collaboration part needed to be top notch. I chose two collaboration outcomes that I think my group nailed! That’s what this blog post is about. The first collaboration outcome that my group nailed was accepting roles and showing understanding by fulfilling those roles. My team was very well conducted when it came to roles. Bailey was filming, I was interviewing people, and Claudia was the “outreach” that helped us get people to interview. That’s pretty much all to be said on that outcome/topic. We really did do an amazing job and there’s nothing to improve on. The other collaboration outcome that my group was amazing at was coming to meetings fully prepared. We met at the beginning of every class period and had thorough discussions on progress and who to interview next. We ended up with some really amazing people that we interviewed. Some of these candidates included our principal; Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Vallerga (The internship coordinator), and Bree Mendez (Sophomore class president). I truly believe that everything that we learned and recorded from the interviews helped us with our video, and helped show the viewer of the video that our school, New Technology High School is the place to be! The community here is so amazing, and my team showed that in our video! *Video is still being edited, will be shown on future post. (Photo above: Created by Genievive Graham, circa 2019) The 9th grade team has a project with a design process and community partner. It's called Social Justice Design and the driving question is "How could we use empathy and critical thinking to design a solution to a real problem in our community?" I'm going to answer a few questions below regarding the blog post. What is a design process? A design process is a process that we've carried out through the first three weeks of this project. The process is empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. We carry out this process while designing something to help a community partner. Who is your community partner? My groups partner is Napa Bicycle Coalition. This community partner is working on getting every youth citizen to bike by holding community events and making biking ¨cool¨ What was your overall goal? My overall goal was to meet the needs and create a solution for my community partner. Empathy - What did you think empathy was before your empathy interview? What did you learn? What would you did differently next time? Before my interview I thought empathy was to understand people, truly. I learned that the interview questions for an interview definitely need to be more open ended than what I thought previously. Stay open and not too focused on certain topics. Let the person be interviewed have free range and be comfortable.
