My initial concept for my lantern was to convey “beyond” the best I could. I had an image in my head for my lantern design and I worked on it, creating the design I had in my head. It developed very quickly and just the way I expected it to. My group had ideas and we decided to mash them all together. From design to completion we brainstormed, made prototypes, and put the whole lantern together. I put a milk carton (it was my polygon), which is sustainable on my lantern design. We already are using milk every day, and plastic has no use, therefore milk cartons are sustainable. My brainstorm was a little different. I wasn’t using polygons, and my final product is more flawed. First, I decorated a plastic cup with marker to make a “globe”. I used a blue watercolor marker to make the ocean/ water of the world. I used a black sharpie to write our world. I tried to draw continents but failed to because I lack artisticness. Then I cut the milk carton into a polygon and decorated it with yellow markers. I glued it all together, and there was my lantern. My polygon is 5.5 inches horizontal on all 4 sides and 8.5 inches vertical. The regular polygon(s) are 2 squares put together, which I constructed on a sheet of paper. (Pictures on separate post) Sustainability of supplies? I used a plastic cup, sharpies, wire, markers, LED light, and a milk carton. Plastic cups and milk cartons are things that people use in their everyday life. Using it in a lantern is a great way to reuse those supplies (although you can recycle them as well). Wire isn’t very sustainable. Sharpies, markers, and LED aren’t very sustainable either. In conclusion, my only sustainable supplies was the milk carton and the plastic cup. My vision for the project was not fulfilled. I know if I work on it harder maybe my artistic blood will come out. I hope that in January my revised lantern will be extraordinary. Today my team did a benchmark, which is basically a brainstorm for our lantern ideas. We ended up with various ideas including fruits, animals, and flowers. Our best idea was a world/ globe and hanging down from it would be a dream catcher made of string and a milk cartoon. Our team wanted to show the beyond theme, that there's more than this earth. Updates to come
