Another update on the Social Justice Design project! (See here My group created two prototypes. The two prototypes that my group came up with included a community event and bike rental. Our team collaborated very nicely and our mindset was to keep working hard and having a fun time doing it. I think that we brainstormed some very good prototypes! My experience with testing the user was pleasant. Our community partner is very accepting and kind of our work. Before informing our community partner of our ideas we considered the users’ interview and what she really wanted from the prototype. She wanted biker safety and to create a social norm of biking everywhere. The feedback we got from our community partner was very positive! She really likes the event and we choose to present that one for our presentation on May 28th. I noticed that she was being honest with us. She genuinely liked our idea of a community biking event. I learned that people can be fun to work with. I usually don't like to collaborate, but I loved this! My areas for growth are my mediocre art skills. If I were to do it again I would have gotten more feedback so I could tailor the prototype more.

Although there are multiple projects going on in the 9th-grade class, (the main project is social justice, see the previous post) in Digital Design class we're making videos. We get to choose groups of 3 and have to include certain shots, or whatever content we want. Then we edit individually. My group includes Claudia and Bailey, and we’re creating a video for HundrED organization. The collaboration part needed to be top notch. I chose two collaboration outcomes that I think my group nailed! That’s what this blog post is about. The first collaboration outcome that my group nailed was accepting roles and showing understanding by fulfilling those roles. My team was very well conducted when it came to roles. Bailey was filming, I was interviewing people, and Claudia was the “outreach” that helped us get people to interview. That’s pretty much all to be said on that outcome/topic. We really did do an amazing job and there’s nothing to improve on. The other collaboration outcome that my group was amazing at was coming to meetings fully prepared. We met at the beginning of every class period and had thorough discussions on progress and who to interview next. We ended up with some really amazing people that we interviewed. Some of these candidates included our principal; Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Vallerga (The internship coordinator), and Bree Mendez (Sophomore class president). I truly believe that everything that we learned and recorded from the interviews helped us with our video, and helped show the viewer of the video that our school, New Technology High School is the place to be! The community here is so amazing, and my team showed that in our video! *Video is still being edited, will be shown on future post. (Photo above: Created by Genievive Graham, circa 2019) The 9th grade team has a project with a design process and community partner. It's called Social Justice Design and the driving question is "How could we use empathy and critical thinking to design a solution to a real problem in our community?" I'm going to answer a few questions below regarding the blog post. What is a design process? A design process is a process that we've carried out through the first three weeks of this project. The process is empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. We carry out this process while designing something to help a community partner. Who is your community partner? My groups partner is Napa Bicycle Coalition. This community partner is working on getting every youth citizen to bike by holding community events and making biking ¨cool¨ What was your overall goal? My overall goal was to meet the needs and create a solution for my community partner. Empathy - What did you think empathy was before your empathy interview? What did you learn? What would you did differently next time? Before my interview I thought empathy was to understand people, truly. I learned that the interview questions for an interview definitely need to be more open ended than what I thought previously. Stay open and not too focused on certain topics. Let the person be interviewed have free range and be comfortable.
Thanks for reading my blog post on my social justice design project! More updates to come. What was the somos el mar project? The somos el mar project event was based around showing our art and motivating people to be kinder to our oceans; influencing people through our art. Plastic and any kind of pollution is so bad for the ocean. We wanted to show this through our art and project deliverables to the public; specifically Napa. We had to create a sculpture in art class, a stop motion PSA video in science, and an art catalogue in Spanish/ Art (to be put in the sold art catalogues the night of the reception/event) Everyone chose to be part of certain committees. Committees included I was a part of the hospitality committee. My role was to make sure everyone was comfortable, knew where to go, and had food, etc. We also made sure a lot of people were buying art catalogues. The responsibility I took on was coordinating with the dress code. I created a different dress code for hospitality as we were the ones guiding people, and we wanted people to feel safe with us. We wore all black. From this overall experience, I've learned that event planning can be difficult. My areas for growth would be to be more proactive in planning. I'd love to work my way up to becoming a leader at a future community event. If I were to do this again, I'd love to lead hospitality. Thank you so much for reading! There are so many ways to succeed in digital design. Personally, I’m not that good at digital design, but I am getting better through the 3 steps I’m about to write about. This blog post will be me addressing three strategies for succeeding in Digital Design. The first strategy is listening to Mrs. Gottfried’s talks at the beginning of class. Mrs. Gottfried will have a discussion almost every class at the start. This is typically a tutorial or presentation. For example, when we started using Adobe Illustrator for a project she showed the class a quick tutorial on how to use the pen tool. This was very helpful and necessary because when you use Illustrator, the tool you use most is the pen tool. Some people who didn’t pay attention to this tutorial or were absent ended up having to look up online tutorials and figure it out on their own. If they had payed attention to the tutorial, this could’ve been prevented. They could have saved themselves a lot of time in the long run. Paying attention and asking questions is very important to be able to succeed in her class! The second strategy is asking for help. Ask for help! Whether it be from your neighbor, someone across the room, or Gottfried herself; ask for help when you get stuck! I´ve found this class is about figuring it out and there are so many tools to help you with that. If you ever get stuck ask someone what next steps should be. The third and last strategy is to give it your all. Overall trying your best is the most important thing. Effort can go a lot farther then skill when you give it your everything. Although you might not understand a concept at first, if you peresevere and ask for help you will be able to succeed! Here are 3 ways you can be successful in digital design. I hope you liked my blog post!
Here is my fire video explaining & talking about a fire that happened in Trinity County.
Intro paragraph: The information you will find in this video is all about how to figure out if your situation/equation is slope intercept form. I use the example of a graph, a table, and a word problem. The equation for slope intercept form is y=mx+b. If you watch this video, I think you'll be able to understand better slope intercept form. Reflection: I haven't thought about slope intercept point for a while, and it's nice to get back into the habit of it. It actually was starting to click, that there's a rate of change and that each part of the equation means something. I learned a lot creating this video. My next steps are to learn the other equations better, and become confident in explaining those ones too. This process was actually really fun!! It was really satisfying to see my hard work and research truly being put to use.
Who am I?
A voice is heard that isn’t familiar coming from a mouth connected, I examine skin on a body I can’t quite recognize, They tell me who I am over and over again, My identity, My family tree But I still can’t remember what any of this means. A gunshot is blasted, I feel the powder on my skin, As if it were to touch me Tears fall as the lives I saved, the lives I left my family for Spit on me, Stomp on me, Hate me. I hear a growl in my abdomen, The scraps of food my family struggles to find, My mother supporting the family that she loved so dearly Whispers in my ear that I didn’t belong The words trapped inside of me, Making me believe the worst. I had to let it out, Let it go. My heart pounds faster than an African drum. A voice is heard that isn’t familiar coming from a mouth connected, I feel the pain on my skin, as if it were to touch me. My parents supporting the family that they loved so dearly. The words trapped inside of me, I had to let it go. Through my past, her past, his past. Through my now, her now, his now. Through my future, her future, his future. That’s who I am. |
